Children eat too much salt due to bread and cereals

The study found that nearly three-quarters of young adults consume more than two to six grams a day. Experts warn that children who eat too much salt will make them more susceptible to high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and other diseases in their future lives. Most of the salt comes from bread and breakfast cereals. Therefore, researchers called on the government to take more measures to allow manufacturers to reduce the salt content of processed foods.
At the Queen Mary University of London, Professor Graham MacGregor and his colleagues used food diaries and urine samples to record the salt intake of 340 children aged 3 to 17 years. They found that 70% of children had ingested more salt than recommended. The study also found that one-third of the salt comes from bread or cereals, and one-fifth comes from meat.
In 2004, the Labor government launched the "salt reduction" campaign, urging manufacturers to gradually reduce the salt content of their products. However, Professor Graham MacGregor believes that this policy is not effective enough. He said: "It's very difficult for parents to reduce their children's daily salt intake unless they start using fresh natural ingredients for each meal. And in salt-reducing campaigns, adults take salt intake before their salt intake begins to be measured. The volume has fallen by 15% in six years. Therefore, this policy is effective, but the effect is not fast enough."
Catherine of the United Kingdom’s “Same Action for Salt and Health” organization said: “The most surprising thing about this new study is that this salt does not come from the salty food that young people are expected to eat, but comes from bread and cereal products.”
