16 Firefighter deaths in July 2016

Excerpts from Firehousenews.com:

At least 16 firefighters lost their lives in July while on duty, with the majority of deaths linked to medical conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure. The National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation has noted that July was one of the deadliest months for firefighters in recent years.

In June 2013, a tragic incident claimed the lives of 25 firefighters, including 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who were killed during a wildfire. This serves as a sobering reminder of the risks faced by those in the firefighting profession.

"As temperatures continue to rise, it's more important than ever for firefighters to stay alert and take care of their health," said Ron Siarnicki, executive director of the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation. He emphasized the need for proper hydration, citing research that shows dehydration can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Firefighters experiencing symptoms like muscle cramps, nausea, or dizziness should seek medical attention immediately. Dehydration can cause the blood to thicken, which may lead to serious complications if left untreated.

The following firefighters died in July while serving their communities:
